2021

[EN] The archaeological excavations that have been carried out in the Hispano-Roman city of Valeria have exhumed the remains of a thermal complex from the 1st century AD that it was in service for four centuries and that, after its abandonment, it was barely spoiled for its constructive and decorative materials. This circumstance has allowed the conservation of a paving mosaic in a good state of preservation. In this same room has been recovered an important collection of fragments corresponding to the parietal musive decoration that constitutes a unique corpus in the Roman archaeology of the province of Cuenca. Due to the historical-archaeological importance of this type of elements, a met…

Pottery decoration in the Neolithic of Kaf Taht el-Ghar (Tetouan, Morocco). AGRIWESTMED Works 2012

2021

2020

The paper analyses the artistic decorations present in the first eight rural villages built in Sicily in 1940 following the law on the colonisation of the Sicilian rural areas. After a brief introduction on the importance of the relationship between art and architecture during Fascism in Italy, the most common types of intervention are presented. They are identified through analyses of the unpublished photographic documentation in box no. 111 of the Accascina Fund, stored in the Regional Library of Palermo, and a bibliographic research both on the historic and on the contemporary sources. Artistic works are distinguishable in religious and civil, and the latter, in turn, in official represe…

Finiture storiche.

2015

This paper aims to show that the reception of British coloured illustrated books in the early twentieth-century reflects the artistic and aesthetic repositioning induced by the development of photomechanical process. Photomechanical reproduction freed the graphic line as well as colour. Reviews published at the turn of the century—as exemplified by The Studio—reveal a tension between opacity and transparency, materiality and lightness, chromophilia and chromophobia. These oppositions apply to the art of the book—as in the books illustrated by Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac—as well as to interior decoration. They are subsumed in the image of the peacock’s ocellus, the eyespot that symbolise…

From the management plan to a protection management system of mosaic decorations in ‘Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral churches of Cefalù and Mon…

2014

The rich Arab - Norman architectural heritage of Palermo is, in its manifestation of different forms of art, an exceptional and unique result of a cultural syncretism. It describes the city as a privileged gathering place of the West Christian culture with the Eastern Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world in the twelfth century. The serial nomination of the ‘Arabic - Norman itinerary of Palermo’ includes monuments holding inside a unique mosaic wall and pavement decoration as one of the major artistic features of its outstanding value. Starting from the ‘Management Plan’ presented in December 2011 for the nomination in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, the present contribution reflects ab…

Hudožestvennoe ubranstvo cerkvej Valaamskogo monastryrâ XVII - načala XIX veka

2016

The collection of church art of the Valamo monastery belongs to worthy rarities. Due to the evacuation from Karelia to Finland, collection survived almost complete. Despite the fact that the collection is well known to specialists in Finland and Russia, the research processes is just beginning. Especially little information exists about the icons of earlier period than of the 18th century. Almost nothing is known about the number of them, neither origins nor something about the painters of them. Many icons of the 18th century from the Valamo’s collection decorated the monastery churches. For this reason, the focus of this dissertation is the decoration of the main interiors of the Cathedral…

I tamburi a cornice in Sicilia

2015

Queste, sebbene affini a quelle impiegate in altre regioni italian…

Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaFirst evidences of frame drums in Sicily trace back to the V century b.C. Tambourines have been recorded until today by paintings archive documentation observations provided by foreign travellers folkloric literature and quite widely by modern ethnomusicology through audio and video recordings collected on the field. Morphology performance techniques repertoires decorations and social use of tambourines in Sicily refer to the wider context of Italian (central-southern part) and Mediteranean area but with some peculiarities chiefly referring to performance skills. Though similar to the techniques practised in other Italian regions in Sicily we can observe a typical style that can be connected with a common historical background with the Arabic-Islamic world.

Iconography and monumental art in "feodal space" from the 10th to the 12th century : the depiction of the Three Kings and its spread

2012

This dissertation deals with the iconography of the Three Kings from the Xth to the XIIth century, by means of a study of its adaptation on monumental decoration in Latin Europe, so as to unravel how it was adapted by feudal society. In order to do so, the first question is that of the new royal status acquired in the Xth century by the Magi from the Gospel of Matthew, analyzed thanks to the concept of “ruler figure” that emerged at the time and was depicted by Marc Bloch in Les Rois thaumaturges (1924) and Ernst Kantorowicz in the The King’s Two Bodies (1957). The aim is to define where the newly defined Three Kings stand in the intricate network of “ties between man and man” theorized by …
